The Beat Goes On: a leadership journey through De Pijp

For the global leadership team of Audemars Piguet we curated a city experience through De Pijp, starting from Hotel Okura. The theme was theirs, The Beat Goes On. The neighbourhood, with its market, its brewery heritage and the city’s trading spirit, did the rest. A story about using a city as the stage for a company’s values.

A neighbourhood built in a hurry

De Pijp was Amsterdam’s first real expansion outside the canal ring. In the second half of the nineteenth century the city was bursting, and the meadows south of the Singelgracht were filled with long, narrow streets of workers’ housing, built fast and cheap. The nickname, the pipe, is said to come from those straight, narrow streets. Heineken built its brewery here in 1867. The Albert Cuyp market opened in 1905 and became the longest street market in the country. Artists, students and later new Amsterdammers from every corner of the world moved in, and De Pijp became the city’s most lively, most mixed, most unpretentious quarter.

It is also, since 1971, home to Hotel Okura, the Japanese grand hotel on the Amstel canal with its Michelin-starred restaurants Ciel Bleu and Yamazato, twenty meeting rooms and a ballroom for 1,200. For the leadership team of a Swiss house, it was the natural base: discreet, impeccable, and five minutes from streets that feel nothing like a hotel.

The Beat Goes On

Audemars Piguet came to Amsterdam with a theme and a set of core values. The theme was The Beat Goes On, a nod to the heartbeat of a mechanical movement and to a company that has kept going, in family hands, since 1875 in Le Brassus. Our brief was to translate that into a city experience the leadership team would remember, rooted in the neighbourhood rather than in a conference room.

So we built the programme around Amsterdam’s trading spirit. The city that invented the stock exchange and shipped the world’s goods through its port has always run on heritage, ambition and energy, which were exactly the notes the client wanted to hit. Starting from the Okura, the team moved through De Pijp on a curated route of places and moments, each connecting the neighbourhood’s story to one of the company’s values, so that by the end the theme had been experienced rather than presented.

Designing a route, not a tour

A city experience for a C-level group is not a walking tour. The group is small, the time is short, the standards are high, and nobody wants to stand in a queue. Everything that happens between the stops is where the work is: transport that appears when needed, hosts at every location, the right table reserved at the right time, security and discretion handled without a word. The visible part is a leadership team enjoying a neighbourhood. The invisible part is a concierge operation running underneath it.

Insider notes

De Pijp works for groups of eight to forty who want to feel the city rather than look at it. Pair the Okura’s precision with the market’s chaos; the contrast is the experience. Go early in the day for the Albert Cuyp, book the smaller restaurants weeks ahead, and give every stop a reason that ties back to your company’s story. The neighbourhood has more than enough history to carry any theme you bring.

“Walk a leadership team through a neighbourhood with a story, and the agenda writes itself.”
